The climate change situation has gotten out of hand to the extent that even the Earth’s Black Box is giving warnings. It’s no secret that the world is seeing atmospheric and climatic changes. Uncontrolled wildfires, destructive floods, massive earthquakes, and unbearable heat waves all remind us that the climate change situation is getting worse!
Climate change activists are working on a project to document it with the help of a monolith called Earth’s Black Box. Continue reading to find out what it is and why it’s been named as such.
Meet Earth’s Black Box
In 2021, leaders across the globe gathered and discussed the harrowing impact of humans on climate. This discussion led to artists, researchers, and architects creating a way to document and store data about the apocalypse through a huge metal monolith. This is why it’s called the Earth’s Black Box. This project is a work of art and a time capsule, which has the purpose of recording the physical transitions that may happen due to environmental changes.
Why Is It Called Black Box?
You might be wondering how and why this monolith got a name like Black Box, like the one used in the aviation industry. Commercial airplanes and a few private planes come with a black box, also called a flight recorder. This box documents important details: plane altitude, plane speed, time is taken and the functionality of the equipment. They are manufactured in ways that they work in extreme temperatures and are indestructible, which is why they are important in aiding investigations in case of a plane crash.
Earth’s Black Box has similar characteristics. It’ll be a specially-designed vault with three-inch reinforced steel and is water and fire-resistant. The 33-feet long vault will be placed in a remote area of western Tasmania, a location that was selected on the basis of its geological and geopolitical stability.
If we’re being totally honest, if the world were to explode, this box wouldn’t last. However, the fact that researchers are now working on a black box for planet Earth itself should be frightening enough for us, since some consider it as a sign of impending doom.
